New Area Codes: 2021–2026 Timeline and Planned Codes

Updated: November 2026. Area code data: NANPA assignments via Simple Wikipedia and areacode.fyi, checked November 2026.

Quick answer: Every new North American area code added from 2021 to 2026, with the area it overlays and its in-service date, plus the codes NANPA has planned next.

When a region runs out of phone numbers, NANPA adds a new area code — almost always as an overlay covering the same area, so nobody's existing number changes. This page lists the new codes added from 2021 to 2026, and the codes planned next.

Why new area codes appear

Every area code holds a limited supply of prefixes, and each prefix holds 10,000 numbers. Mobile phones, business lines and connected devices burn through them, so busy regions run out. The fix used to be a split — cutting the map in two and giving one half a new code, which forced millions of people to change numbers. Today the fix is nearly always an overlay: the new code covers exactly the same area as the old one, existing numbers stay the same, and only new lines get the new code. The trade-off is that 10-digit dialing becomes mandatory in the area.

For some overlays, new-code numbers are only handed out once the older codes run out — that applies to 465 in New York City and to the planned 565 in Georgia.

Dates above come from NANPA planning letters and the NANPA area-code database, as reported by Verizon's area-code guide and Wikipedia's list of North American Numbering Plan area codes, checked November 2026. If a date here disagrees with NANPA's current file, NANPA wins.

FAQs

Why do new area codes appear?

Because a region runs out of phone numbers. Each area code holds a limited supply of prefixes, and when they run low, NANPA adds a new code — almost always as an overlay covering the same area.

Will my phone number change when a new area code is added?

No. Overlays do not change existing numbers. Only new lines get the new code. What usually changes is dialing: 10-digit dialing becomes mandatory in the area.

What is an overlay?

An overlay is a second (or third, or fourth) area code covering exactly the same geographic area as an existing one. Neighbors in the same city can then have different area codes.

How do I know if a new area code is real?

Check it here or against NANPA's records. A genuinely new code appears in NANPA planning letters with an in-service date. A code with no NANPA record — like 278 or 627 — is not in use, and calls showing it are almost certainly spoofed.

What codes are planned next?

565 for Georgia (912 area, earliest activation December 2027), 761 for Kentucky (502 area, date not set), 451 for North Carolina (828 area, date not set) and 273 for Quebec (listed for February 2027).
