History
The North American Numbering Plan was created in 1947 to organise telephone numbers across the United States, Canada and neighbouring regions. When an area runs out of phone numbers, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) either splits the area or adds an overlay code that covers the same area; overlays are now the usual approach, which is why 10-digit dialing is standard in most places. Area code 227 serves Maryland (overlay of 301/240).
