Caribbean Area Codes That Look Like US Numbers
Updated: November 2026. Area code data: NANPA assignments via Simple Wikipedia and areacode.fyi, checked November 2026.
If a number from the Bahamas, Jamaica or Barbados looks exactly like a US number, that is because it is dialed exactly like one. These Caribbean regions are members of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), so they share the +1 country code with the US and Canada. From the US, you dial them the same way: 1 + area code + 7 digits, with no international prefix.

Bermuda (441) is also a NANP member, but it is not yet in our directory. Puerto Rico (787/939) and the U.S. Virgin Islands (340) are US territories, so calls there dial exactly like domestic US calls.
The missed-call trap
The shared +1 code creates one real risk: a missed call from an unknown Caribbean number is not necessarily a domestic call. One-ring callback schemes use Caribbean numbers to trick you into calling back a premium-rate line. If you do not recognise the number and were not expecting a call from the region, do not call it back — look the caller up independently instead. Report scam calls at reportfraud.ftc.gov and forward spam texts to 7726.
FAQs
Do I need a country code to call the Caribbean?
No international prefix is needed from the US or Canada: Caribbean NANP regions share the +1 country code, so you dial 1 + area code + 7 digits, exactly like a US number.
Why does a Bahamas number look like a US number?
Because the Bahamas is a member of the North American Numbering Plan. Its area code, 242, works like any US area code.
Is calling the Caribbean an international call?
Dialing works like a domestic call, but your carrier may still charge international or roaming rates depending on your plan — check before calling.
Should I call back a missed Caribbean call?
Only if you recognise the number or were expecting it. Unknown missed calls from Caribbean numbers can be one-ring callback schemes that connect you to premium-rate lines.
