800 Country Code vs 800 Toll-Free: Two Different 800s
Updated: November 2026. Area code data: NANPA assignments via Simple Wikipedia and areacode.fyi, checked November 2026.
There are two different 800s, and they work nothing alike. 1-800 is the North American toll-free prefix. +800 is a separate ITU country code for a worldwide toll-free service. The difference is the digits that follow the 800 — 7 for North America, 8 for the worldwide service.
Side by side
| 1-800 (NANP toll-free) | +800 (UIFN worldwide) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Toll-free prefix for the US and Canada | Universal International Freephone Number, issued by the ITU |
| Full format | 1 + 800 + 7 digits (11 digits total) | International prefix + 800 + 8 digits (11 digits after the prefix) |
| Example | 1-800-555-0132 | +800 12345678 (the ITU's own example format) |
| Where it works | United States and Canada (from abroad, usually not at all) | One number worldwide, but only in countries that participate in the UIFN program |
| Who pays | The business receiving the call | The business receiving the call |
How to tell which one you have
- Count the digits after 800. Seven digits means North American toll-free (1-800-XXX-XXXX). Eight digits means the worldwide service (+800 XXXXXXXX).
- Look for the 1. A number written 1-800 is North American. A number written +800 (or 00800 in Europe) is the worldwide service.
And 0800?
0800 numbers are yet another thing: domestic freephone numbers inside the UK (0808 works the same way). They are not dialable as +800, and they are not North American toll-free numbers either. Three systems, one familiar set of digits — always check the digits around the 800.

FAQs
Is +800 a country?
Not a country — it is a country code assigned by the ITU for the Universal International Freephone Service: one toll-free number that works across participating countries.

For the caller, yes, where the service is available — the business receiving the call pays, just like North American toll-free.
